Usworth Houswifery
The History Society has recently received the attendance registers of six cookery classes (that were later labelled 'Cookery, Laundry and Houswifery Duties!) that took place in Usworth schools between 1908 and 1923. These are of great interest because most Usworth school records were destroyed in a fire in 1947.
Below is the cover of Special Subjects Register for 1908 and the Record of Instruction for that year; scullery duties and a variety of recipes, followed by reproductions of the class lists for 1908/09 (Teacher: Margaret Grieve replaced my Miss Temple), 1914/15 (Kathleen Margaret Slate), 1916 (Isabel Jackson), two 1919 classes (Isabel Jackson) and 1922/23 (Isabel Jackson).
They show the names and dates of birth of between 13 and 20 girls in each. These are of great interest to those with female ancestors and relatives from the Usworth area, born between February 1896 and December 1910.
the History Society will be very interesting in learning of other school records form this period had have survived. Contact us at washintonhistorysoc:gmail.com
