Hearth Tax 1666 and 1674
Washington History Society
From 1662 to 1689 Washington, like the rest of England and Wales, was subject the Hearth Tax, and charge on fireplaces. Surviving records from 1666 and 1674 for Washington Harraton (the approximate area of modern Washington) have been analysed. They give a valuable insight into the social and economic fabric of the predominantly rural area in the 17th century. The list of payers and non-payers will be of particular interest to family historians seeking connection in the 17th century.
