Alan Price born 1942
Musician, Alan Price of The Animals and The Alan Price Set, was born on 19 April 1942, and his home address was Gowenlea, New Road, Bonemill Lane, Fatfield. His parents were John George Price (born 1910) and Elizabeth Gowen (1912), both from Jarrow who had married in 1935. Alan’s older brother, also John George, was born in 1937.
Gowenlea as a house name only appeared in the 1939 Register, so it might have been called after his mother's maiden name.
Alan’s father, John, worked at the British Oxygen plant at Barley Mow, just two miles to the west of the family home. Tragically he was killed by an explosion at work on 7 February 1948.
The family moved to Jarrow after his father’s death to live with Alan’s maternal grandparents. He spent only two or three terms at Fatfield school, just a few hundred yards from his home. Alan went to Jarrow Grammar school in 1953, not long after his mother remarried to John Ross. He refers to himself as a Jarrow Lad.
His first band the Alan Price Combo changed their name to the Animals in 1962 and enjoyed huge success in the USA and the UK, though Alan formed his own band, The Alan Price Set and he also dueted with Georgie Fame. He made several film, stage and television appearances.
He has married twice, Maureen Elizabeth Donneky in 1971 and Alison Thomas in 1990.
